Essay on Analyzing Chilrdren Child Observation - 761 Words

Children are some of the most interesting creatures on Earth. At any moment they may do something that makes you laugh. The next moment they may do something that makes you want to crawl under your seat in embarrassment. That’s what drew me to them. I’m around adults all day and all night since starting college. I wanted to sit and observe God’s most precious creation in action. My mother-in-law’s home was the most obvious choice for my observation. She keeps several children, including my sixteen month old son, in her home daycare business. All of the children who are kept there are little boys ages three or under. I chose Friday, August 28, 2009 to analyze how the children interact not only with each other, but also with their†¦show more content†¦Meanwhile, Austin, Brayden, and Gage all continued to cook. The three year old boy’s attention span appears to be longer than that of the sixteen month old; while they continue to cook , Karson has already gotten into three different situations. Karson is now playing with the potted plant and is headed back toward the gat to undoubtedly get into more mischief. The entire time up until now, Ryan, the only two year old, has been sitting in the swing, now he is on the move. I haven’t yet found where my mother-in-law finds the energy and the patience to handle six boys under the age of four. One of the boys is sent for baby wipes to clean all the dirty faces and to wipe all the dirty hands, for it shall not be long until the parents and some grandparents come to pick up their precious cargo. Just now Karson’s papa drives around the corner of the house on the tractor, pronounced â€Å"crakter.† He is apparently going for a ride as is common when Papa is home. However, this time Karson doesn’t want to go, maybe it is because I am here on the porch today. As the lost of the faces and hands are wiped off, the first of the grandparents ar rives and then another. The children’s bags and shoes are gathered up to be taken with them, only to return again on Monday. With the departure of Gage, Reid, Austin, and Brayden, we are only left with Karson and Ryan, who is enjoying a sippy cup of lemonade. The two boys are downing those delicious drops of lemonade as

Answers: Introduction In every organization the working and the leadership style of the organization determines the profit and service. In such case, the management and the leaders need to motivate the employees to retain the perfect organizational structure. PM Company could not retain the leadership attributes, which degraded the service of the organization the self, employed at the same tome the ones who were part of the organization could not work effectively (Lumby and Coleman, 2010). The new CEO thus needs to amend the system and have best skills in the organization. Task 1 1. Importance of selection process and implication of legal regulatory The most important aspect of the selection process is the qualification required for the post or the designation. This helps in the recruitment of the people who are able in their position. This ensures higher productivity and proficiency in the organization. Ryan (2010) mentions the quality of the production or the service by the employees ensures the satisfaction. Apart from this, the selection process is also important to enhance the organizational culture of the company. In the present case, PM Company needs to have effective selection process that would enhance the working culture of the company. The application for the recruitment process is measures against the norms and the expectation of the organization. In the present company, it is important to note that the company needs to come out of the critical situation through implementation of a proper process. The employees are the base of the organization who can serve the organization based on the expectations. The new hire has the enthusiasm to do well in their respective areas and to help in regard of the expectation. PM Company is one of the companies that could not channel the needs of the organization and has poor services. The recruitment process with effective human resource could be effective (Senior, 2010). The documents required for the selection or the recruitment process is the credentials. This acts as the legal document and as the proof that is important for the recruitment process of the company. Sinclair (2010) put forward the documents include the pass certificates of different levels of academic background. The documents required include the application letter, and then come the credentials and finally the job offer letter or the acceptance letter from the employee. Thus, the list for the recruitment process would include the mentioned structure. First the application of the interested employee, the credentials in the interview process, the offer letter and the acceptance letter of the offer from PM Company. The legal consideration important in the recruitment process includes no discrimination based on race, ancestry, color, place of origin, religion, political belief, family status, marital status, mental disability, age, sex or sexual orientation. These are the basic things based on which PN company cannot make use of the distinction in the recruitment process. Apart from this, the ethical consideration is that the organization needs to offer the respect to the employees. PM Company needs to amend the necessary security in the job with the help of the right sizing of the organization. Williams (2005) opine the requirement of the legislature includes that there must not be any discrimination with respect to the background or the orientation of the people. The job seekers need to be ensured equally along with the authentication of the hiring process. The selection process of the PM Company entails that within the above-mentioned tactics and the consideration the employment process has t o be effective. 2. Part in the selection process and the contribution The role of the new CEO in the recruitment process includes selection of the right person. As in the present case, PM Company needs a complete change in the organizational structure the selection process of the company has to be effective (Witkiewitz et al. 2010). In such, case it is important to note that being the new CEO the role in the recruitment process include the following:- The transformation in the recruitment process has to be effective. In such case, the employee is selected needs to have the academic background that is essential for the requirement of the company. The most important aspect in such case is that the transformation has to be positive along with the coordination of the newly hired employees. The other important and crucial work of the CEO is to build a team in the company that is effective to work together. The selection of the employees has to be such that there is presence of an integrative system. The integration and the cohesive work of the team could be efficient in dealing with the requirement of the customers. The customers would have effective service that was missing. The contribution of the CEO in the selection process is that most of the organization would have better customer service. The monitoring of the human resource team would be effective in channeling the rework of the organization. Apart from this, the important method is that selection of the team as per the academic degree and requirement would help in efficient workforce of PM Company. 3. Skills and attribute of the leadership style The major qualities required in any organization include honesty, delegation ability, communication, commitment, confidence, and effective relation with employees. In any organization, the above-mentioned attributes play a dominant role in dealing with the aspect of leadership. In the present case that is in the PM Company the leader needs to be dominant in all the aspect that is mentioned. Honesty- honesty of the leader is one of the key elements needed by any organization. in the present case the precarious condition that is due for PM company it is important that there are honest measures taken (Yukl, 2010). The role of the new CEO is to have a proficient and effective structure that is fruitful in making the team honest. The unethical transaction or any such process should not be, used along with the service of the company. The business should be clear with effective encouragement to the employees. Delegation ability- the ability of the organization for the purpose of delegation includes the leadership in the organization that is useful in identifying the strength of the organization. In this regard, it is important to note that trust in the team and the focus are the most important aspects of the organization. Communication- in order to establish the right communication technique the organization needs both traditional methods like meeting and modern methods. The modern methods include the ones that are effective in dealing with the advanced techniques. Senior (2010) put forward the major difference in between the management and the leadership is that in management there is a group of official to monitor. In case of the leadership, the leaders may be one or more than one but the most important aspect would be motivating the employees. Management focuses on systems where as leader focus on people. The management relies on the methods of control however; the trust is the most important aspect for the leader. The manager tries to imitative in case of much organization where as in case of leaders they try to originate. 4. Leadership styles and motivation of staff According to Lewin, there are three types of leadership that is commonly owned by the organization in terms of running the business successfully and achieve the goals of the business. These are Autocratic: this type of leaders does not consult with the team members in order to make the decision for business improvements. The autocratic leaders also do not consult or include any suggestion though it is useful. Majority of large organization such as Apple, Sony, etc uses the autocratic leadership style in order to grow their business and achieve the goals for the company. Bathurst and Monin (2010) argued that autocratic leadership style can be demoralizing. Democratic: leaders with the democratic style make their decision through consulting with the members and other information that relates m with the business. It is the most effective leadership style for running the business organization properly. It allows the leaders in motivating their employees (Biehl-Missal, 2010). Laissez-faire: This type of leaders provides freedom to their employees to do their work. It is not effective because in major cases employees do according to them that make losses for business. According to the current situation of PM Company, they have to integrate democratic leadership style because the company faces many troubles. Therefore, the new CEO has to consult with their team member to recover the situation. Democratic leadership style also allows the CEO to motivate their staffs through engaging them in core business process of PM Company. The new manager of the organization can easily motivate the respective employees in various ways. This can be done through the help of proper and effective means of communication to the respective employees. The new manager of the organization is required to take effective feedback from the employees regarding several issues that they are facing (Bush, 2010). If an effective communication process can solve this, then the productivity of the employees will increase at an increasing rate. If productivity and efficiency of the employees increases, then the sales and profits of the organization will automatically increase. This is one way the organization can easily attain its desired mission and vision. In addition to this, if the organization follows a participative leadership style, then, the employees of the organization will be highly motivated. This further induces that the organization may also distribute several financial and non-financial rewards to motivate all the respective e mployees. It can be further inferred that financial rewards of the organization includes bonus, incentives and form of remunerations. Levay (2010) opined Non-financial rewards include promotions, motivational certificates and others. Therefore, it can be deduced that if the organization gives these financial and non-financial rewards, then the employees will be highly motivated. Task 2: 1. Benefits and effectiveness of team working for achieving the goal and objective of the PM Company: As this PM Company has faced severe issues regarding management and leadership activities effective team working is very necessary as well as important for achieving the pre determined goal and objective of this company. Working with effective team is very essential for the activities of organization. Teamwork is the other name of co-operation among the members of the team as well as employees of the team. As discussed by Bledow et al. (2011), team is a group of small number of people with different expertise. Team is consisted with different people of complementary skills who are mostly committed towards meeting a common objective as well as purpose of the business company. Working with teams can be very helpful for improving the activities of the organization. Effective teamwork can be able to increase the competitiveness of the company by enhancing the productivity among the organization. The quality of work can be improved by the teamwork. Working with team also improves the motivation among the team members within the organization. On the other hand, Bibi et al. (2012) argued that, an effective team can be able to attain better result than the work of individual for the same purpose. The members of a team always share a common goal within the organization. Members of the team can also support the development and growth of the company. A team can do more innovative and difficult work. However, different experts are involved within a team can be able to achieve the commitment towards the goal and objective of the company. Different psychologists and management thinkers have focused upon the development of an effective team for achieving the pre-determined goal and objective of the organization. Belbins team role model is very necessary for understanding the advantage of a team in order to complete a goal of the organization. Belbin has identified nine roles of a team for achieving the goal as well as objective of the organization. Figure 1: Belbins team role model (Source: Bal et al. 2013, pp-110) Belbin has identified nine team roles and grouped those roles into three sectors. Every role has been included with the behavior and different interpersonal strengths of an individual. Nine team roles are included within action-oriented roles, people oriented roles and thought oriented roles. However, shaper, implementer and completer or finisher are involved within action oriented roles of a person (Chen and Hung, 2010). On the other hand, team worker, coordinator and resource investigator are included within people oriented roles of a team. Finally, plant, specialist and monitor evaluator are involved within the thought-oriented role of a team. However, the detail work structures of a team are discussed in a table format below: Action oriented roles Shaper Implementer Finisher Challenges the team for improving the present situation Puts different concepts within action Ensures timely completion of the task People oriented roles Coordinator Worker of team Resource investigator Acts like chairperson Enhances the cooperation between every members Explore different opportunities within outside era Thought oriented roles Plant Evaluator Specialist Presents some new approaches and concepts Investigates the options Provides different expert skills Table 1: Roles of members of a team in Belbins team role model (Source: Bakker et al. 2011, pp-10) Therefore, CEO of the PM Company should improvise the structure of the management within the organization. In order to improve the situation the CEO should focus upon the process of teamwork. An effective team can be able to meet the predetermined goal and objective of the organization. PM Company can utilize the team role model in order to identify the behavioral strengths and weakness of every person within the team. After that, the company should make a team of expertise within the organization. On the other hand, Babcock-Roberson and Strickland (2010) argued that, Bebins team role model could help this company for building productive relationship within the members of the team. This model can also be very helpful for the developing a high performance team with different capabilities of several people. This team role model can also be very much helpful for PM Company in order to manage effective recruitment process within a team. Those nine roles of a team can be helpful for achieving the goal within any critical as well as unforeseen situation within the organization. However, the team should be able to resolve any conflict while dealing with the particular task. PM Company should use this tool of Belbin in order to balance the team with the help of different people of particular abilities. This company should manage the interpersonal differences by utilizing the team role model of Belbin. Therefore, this company can be able to draw effective management and leadership abilities for the enhanced future operation of the business company. This company can be able to deliver different tasks for several people of the organization in order to achieve the goal. Team wok can be able to achieve an effective administration as well as leadership and management among different departments of the organization. Therefore, the CEO should focus upon the recruiting and selection process of the employees for delivering the task within the organization. The employees of the organization can be able to deliver the task as per the requirement of the particular task. 2. Explaining and evaluating the plan of monitoring process and performance management for the achievement of high standard management within the organization: As discussed by Anyadike (2013), performance management is very effective as well as important process of an organization. Employees and managers of an organization cooperate with the work practice of the organization with the help of performance management. Performance management process helps to plan, supervise as well as review the whole work objectives and contribution of different employees within the organization. An organization should focus upon different attributes of human resource management for perfectly manage the performance of the employees. Different factors are there for managing the performance of employees of the organization. Figure 2: Performance management (Source: Andersen and Minbaeva,2013, pp-810) Those are involved these factors within the planning of monitoring and assessment process of the work performance within the activities of employees within the organization. The management level of the organization should maintain the performance cycle for planning as well as reviewing the whole process of work within the organization. Planning is very necessary for understanding the major areas of responsibilities of the employees of the organization. This organization should be able to develop the individual priorities of the employees within the organization. However, Altarawmneh and Al-Kilani (2010) discussed that, good performance is related with the hard working and high performance among the employees of the organization. Strong commitment should be provided by the organization for achieving the perfect role within the organization. Quality, quantity, time and cost should be planned for the organization. On the other hand, Ali (2012) stated that, individual goal should be measured by SMART objective. There are some factors within the SMART setting of objective. Therefore, every individual should be able to deliver the pre-determined objective of SMART within the business organization. S refers to Smart, M refers to measurable, A refers to attainable objective, R refers to realistic and T refers to time bound activities of the individual employees of the organization. Every individual should determine a SMART goal within the work of the organization. SMART objective helps to visualize the proper planning of every individual within the organization. However, Adeniji et al. (2013) discussed that, there are different ways of optimizing the performance review within the organization. The techniques of performance review are involved within different steps; those are setting the particular goal with effective measures, beginning the planning of performance, ensuring the ongoing process, improving the productivity through better goal management process, gathering information from different number of sources. However, the aspect of performance management should be linked with recognition and rewards structure of the employees and managers of the organization. On the other hand, AbuKhalifeh et al. (2013) argued that, effective communication is very much required for this purpose. The standards of performance management should be properly communicated with the employees of the organization. Every employee and manager should know every standard of performance among the employees of the organization. An effective performance plan should be developed among the employees of the organization. Every employee should know the objective of the performance measures within the organization Conclusion: This assignment has discussed some effective techniques for the future development of PM Company within the business operational level of the organization. This company has faced several issues regarding management and leadership activities within the organization. Therefore, this company should develop improved and innovative technique of recruitment for the employees of the company. References Bathurst, R. and Monin, N. (2010). A True Heroine In Wuthering Heights Essays

A True Heroine In Wuthering Heights Essays A True Heroine In Wuthering Heights Paper A True Heroine In Wuthering Heights Paper Essay Topic: Wuthering Heights The story of Emile Brontes Wuthering Heights takes place during a time in history when women existed and were important to family and society, but had no legal or social rights, as their well-being, health and happiness depended upon the men in their lives. From the start of the novel, as told by Mr. Lockwood we see that Cathy did not seem to belong in the Heathcliff household, but by the end of the story, it was Cathy who owned the entire Wuthering Heights estate. Her accomplishments were impressive, as she over came whatever obstacles the men in her life put in her way! Bronte emphasized Cathys passion, and determination, making her the only character who was able to rise above the hatred, discrimination and cruelty. Cathy inherited her mothers pride and beauty, and her fathers mildness and devotion but she also had a spirit all her own, a fighting spirit of a hidden warrior. It was important for Cathy to have these characteristics (especially her will to survive) because it was these inner strengths that enabled her to be my heroine. One of Cathys strongest forces was her intense loyalty and love for her father I care for nothing in comparison to papa, Ill never to an act or say a word to vex him (231). I love papa better then you (273). Cathy was the only character in this novel and Jane Eyre that actually showed love, and dedication to a parent. Her respect for her father is an important aspect in Cathys character as it made her an honourable woman. A strong-willed Cathy enjoyed disobeying orders from Nelly as a child, and continued to do so as she grew up by sneaking letters to Linton. I wish you to avoid his house and family (223). She continued to develop a relationship with Linton, although it became clear very early that they were not meant to be together. He had no spirit, was spiteful and demanded constant attention, but it was because Linton was so defenseless and an easy target for Heathcliff that Cathy had feelings for him. They were not feelings of true love, but a desire, or duty to protect and support Linton, in his days of need. It was as if Cathy sacrificed herself for Lintons well being. Cathys sympathy and humanity for Linton was impressive and courageous. Im not crying for myself Ellen, its for him- He expected to see me again tomorrow, hell be so disappointed (224). Even though my heroines goal was to please Linton, when he pushed too hard, she also had the resolve to fight back Cathy, beside herself, gave the chair a violent push (239). And, unlike everyone else who feared Heathcliff she had no problem in attacking him. You cant make us hate each other, I defy you to hurt him, I defy you to frighten me (287). Catherine told Hareton who she was and where she was going and asked him to show her the way (197). It was fate that she met Hareton through her relationship with Linton, but my heroine had to be patient before she experienced her own happiness. It was Cathys strength which enabled her to survive the torture and suffering during her days as Lintons wife and Heathcliffs prisoner. This awful experience only made her a better person. It prepared her for her destiny as Haretons wife and as landlord of Wuthering Heights. Bronte wanted the reader to have confidence in Cathys future success by displaying her heroic attributes; having the stamina to endure those long, lonely days separated from her dying father. At one point, Heathcliff owned all of Wuthering Heights and the Grange, but Cathy still showed spirit and optimism by planting a delicate flower bed in the middle of the dark and depressed black currant trees. This rebellious act showed Cathys passion for life, as she looked at her beautiful flowers as a new healthy and fresh beginning (Lybyer, online). Perhaps Cathys garden represented her future achievements as a blossoming flower amongst the weeds. As she was determined to overcome injustice, she stated You shouldnt grudge a few yards of earth for me to ornament, when you have taken all my land and my money, and Haretons land and his money (319). Cathy was a heroine who showed that it is possible to rise above adversity not with revenge, but with forgiveness, and dignity. As Ellen observed, Miss Cathy, conversant with no bad deeds, except her own slight acts of disobedience, repented on the day they were committed, was amazed at the blackness of spirit that could brood on and cover revenge for years (223). Cathy had something just as powerful as the will to survive, she was humane, and she was able to forgive and forget. At the end of the novel, Cathy married Hareton. Their relationship was one of happiness and true love. Ill come and teach him to read it right, if he refuses Ill go upstairs and never tease him again (314). She knew that Heathcliff tried to corrupt Hareton, He will never be bale to emerge from his bathos of coarseness and ignorance (219). She realized that Heathcliff only succeeded on the surface. Deep down in spite of his influence Hareton remained a kind, innocent, loving man, a perfect match for my heroine. The pupil claimed a reward and received at least five kisses, which he generously returned (308). Cathy was now at peace with herself and with life; something that none of the first generation of characters was able to achieve (especially her own mother) Cathy triumphed over adversity in a subtle, almost innocent way. She won back the land that was rightfully hers and Haretons. It is true that eventually Heathcliff merely gave up the fight, but it was Cathys spirit for life and hatred of revenge which allowed justice to prevail. When other characters in the novel were gloomy, sinister and sad, Cathy was a breath of fresh air, giving the reader a feeling of calmness. She also proved that good can win over evil and that humanity goes hand in hand with success. For all these reasons, Cathy must be respected and honored as a true heroine of Wuthering Heights. Abstract: The doctrine of separation of powers is essentially what fortifies the three pillars of democracy. Without such ademarcation, the point of such offices and such pillars is redundant, and the nation might as well be a dictatorial state, with all three pillars working in collusion. This assignment comparesthe doctrine ofseparationof powers in India, the U.S.A. and England, and the reiteration of this demarcation in the three nations by the judiciary. INTRODUCTION Meaning The doctrine of Separation of Powers emphasizes the mutual exclusiveness of the three organs of government, viz., legislature, executive and judiciary. The main underlying idea is that each of these organs should exercise only one type of function. There should not be concentration of all the functions in one organ otherwise it will pose a threat to personal freedom, for; in that case, it could act in an arbitrary manner. It could enact a tyrannical law, execute it in a despotic manner and interpret it in an arbitrary manner without any external control. The purpose underlying separation doctrine is to diffuse governmental authority so as to prevent absolutism and guard against tyrannical and arbitrary powers of the state, and to allocate each function to the institution best suited to discharge it. The rationale underlying the doctrine that been that if all power is concentrated in one and the same organ, there would rise the danger of state absolutism endangering the freed om of the people. However, it needs to be appreciated that in considering this doctrine, we have moved from the discipline of law to that of political theory. The separation of powers is a doctrine not a legal principle. To evolve effective control mechanism, man had been looking for devices to contain the forces of tyranny and authoritarianism. "Separation of Powers" was conceived to be one such device. It may not be possible to state precisely the origins of the doctrine of separation of powers. However, if we look to the writings of the Greek philosopher Aristotle , it is possible to discern a rudimentary separation of powers doctrine. Thus in his Politics, Aristotle remarked that: There are three elements in each constitution in respect of which every serious lawgiver must look for what is advantageous to it; if these are well arranged, the constitution is bound to be well arranged, and the differences in constitutions are bound to correspond to the differences between each of these three elements. The three are, first the deliberative, which discusses everything of common importance; second, the officials . . .; and third, the judicial element. The English political theorist, JohnLocke (1632-1704), also envisaged a threefold classification of powers. Writing in The Second Treatise of Government (1689), Locke drew a distinction between three types of power: legislative, executive and federative. . In Locke's analysis, the legislative power was supreme and although the executive and federative powers were distinct, the one concerned with the execution of domestic law within the state and the other with a state's security and external relations, he nevertheless took the view that they are always almost united' in the hands of the same persons. Absent from his classification is any mention of a separate judicial power. Moreover, the proper exercise of these powers is

Distributive Bargaining Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Distributive Bargaining - Coursework Example The purpose is to set parameters that determine the reservation price. The third skill set is Skill 3.3 which refers to the ability to learn the other party`s offer and bracket it so as to attain a desired outcome in a distributive negotiation. The forth skill set is Skill 3.4. It refers to the ability to recognize custom practices and use them in evaluating offers, making counter offers, and reaching acceptable settlement points. The final skill is Skill 3.5, which refers to the ability to learn the significance of framing in its role in negotiation. The purpose of the skill is to influence others perception and how they respond to offers (Carrell 2008). Zone of possible agreement (ZOPA): if assumed that the buyer’s maximum price is b. the sellers minimum acceptable price by the seller is s. if b is greater than s then ZOPA exists. In other words ZOPA occurs because the buyer is willing and able to meet or surpass the minimum price set by the seller. ZOPA reflects the negotiating latitude, bargaining attitude, settlement range or bargaining range. Experienced negotiators argue the criticality of making the initial offer because it can greatly influence the other negotiating party`s perception of Zone of possible agreement since each party bases estimation of ZOPA on their reservation (Carrell 2008). Relational information are beliefs, facts and feelings concerning the relations of the parties. Relational information help in building a good will relationship in distributive bargaining. Substantive information are facts or questions concerning the other party`s offer that utilizes reason and logic. The information can be used to dictate negotiation in distributive bargaining. Equality norm refers to a scenario in a distributive bargaining case where both parties in the negotiation split the difference and gain an equal amount. Equity norm refers to a situation where the split is carried based on the input of the parties involved in

The Role of Federalism in Education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

The Role of Federalism in Education - Essay Example Civil rights leaders, such as Evers and King, publicized the unfair treatment of African Americans and other people of color, and the spotlight turned on education reform (Allen, 1996, p. 162). Since 1965 many further efforts have been made to update and improve the education system, but it's similar to plugging up leaks in a dam--eventually, the dam will fall apart through lack of structure and foundation. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, signed into law by George W. Bush, is the present administration's effort to rebuild the dam before it's too late, but will politics and business interests create invisible cracks during implementation Is this Act the ultimate answer and does it take into consideration the global issues that presently exist in the 21st century As America continues to evolve as a nation, the influence of the Internet on communication between countries makes it clear that education must include multicultural education, not specifically from the viewpoint of Americans with no knowledge of other cultures, but with input from those who can share their native language and their way of life with others. We live in a country of immigrants, but somewhere along the line we chose to establish a nation based on white, Anglo-Saxon, protestant tenets, ignoring the rich mix of cultures that make us who we are. According to Sonia Nieto, "Multicultural education cannot be understood in a vacuum but rather must be seen in its personal, social, historical, and political context" (1996, p. 1). Addressing Education Reform During the 1950s in the United States, the family unit seemed solid and pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock gave mothers credit for knowing instinctively how to raise their children. This was in contrast to behaviorist John Watson's method of rigid discipline, and Spock's book The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care (1946) was so popular it led to gradual erosion of the rules of behavior. In the meantime, a 1954 Supreme Court ruling that public schools must be integrated was virtually ignored until 1957 when nine black students were enrolled at a previously all-white school in Little Rock, Arkansas. This was the beginning of the public's introduction to cultural differences, and it was compounded by what was known as the "Red Threat," or communism. When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik first, it was decided that American children needed a better educational foundation, especially in math and science. This created what was called at the time an "informational flood" with children a nd their reading becoming the focus of big business. With this increased production, "children's books became less a branch of literature and more a gainful product" (Allen, p. 132). The increasing focus on children's education made its shortcomings more evident, and it was clearly necessary to address segregation and unequal educational opportunity due to poverty. The problems inherent in the education system as it existed in the 1960s called for drastic measures. Francis Keppel, dean of Harvard Graduate School of Education, was appointed U.S. Commissioner of Education and crafted the ESEA of 1965 in an effort to address the issues that extended
